Established in 1974 by Bluff Engineering & Welding and known as the Bluff Engineering Liferaft Division, Engineer Steven Sargeant started working in the liferaft service area in 1994. In 2008 Steven and Kirstin Sargeant purchased the company and started trading as Southern Ocean Safety Equipment Limited. In 2011, Southern Ocean Safety outgrew the Bluff Engineering liferaft site and moved to 300 Foreshore Road.
The company has developed into a recognised service provider for Marine and Aviation Safety throughout New Zealand. Southern Ocean Safety Equipment Limited Uses a Telarc Quality Management System, is a New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority Maintenance License Holder and is also approved under Maritime New Zealand.

All liferaft servicing must be carried out at and by an authorised service station.
Southern Ocean Safety Equipment Limited is approved by various manufacturers to carry out the servicing and testing of their brands of liferafts.
Our employees regularly attend National and International revision courses to enable a continued high standard of servicing. We have the facilities to service liferafts from 4 to 150 persons.
We know you’re not making money when tied up at the wharf, that’s why we offer our hire liferafts to our clients free* of charge while their liferaft is in for servicing with us.

Aviation Southern Ocean Safety Equipment Limited holds a New Zealand Civil Aviation Maintenance Licence for the servicing of Aviation Lifejackets. We are service agents for Switlik and Roaring Forties equipment. We can service jackets as part of CAA part 91 & 135 requirements.
Marine Southern Ocean Safety Equipment Limited are approved to sell and service many brands of marine lifejackets, inflatable life vests, and pilots’ jackets.
From SOLAS approved jackets to leisure style jackets we hold a range of parts and cylinders.
